New Year decluttering ideas
In 2014, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo, took the world by storm. Since then, the trend of decluttering and minimalism has continued to inspire people to tidy and make peaceful sanctuaries in their homes. You may feel inspired to declutter your home with the start of the New Year. Here are our top tips for helping you plan your declutter and launch the New Year.
First of all, know your clutter
You'd think decluttering would be the perfect way to jump in and get going. But, before you start throwing away and recycling things, take some time first to consider the clutter. You might have cluttered areas of your home because you've already forgotten your own things and end up buying two, or perhaps three! The category in which you may slip into is saving objects, because you may need them. Finally, for as long as you can remember, you may have had a cluttered home environment and you're not even sure where to start, or if you need to declutter at all. If you are interested in decluttering your house, think first about these categories and decide where you match - It'll support the thinking process when you decide to keep things or not.
Question yourself about the clutter
No, you don't have to ask yourself whether the object "sparks happiness" When you declutter every space in your house, ask yourself whether you are actually using that object. If you haven't used it in a year or, even more generally, you've forgotten that you purchased the item first; it's usually safe for you to dispose of or donate the object.
Do a little bit at a time
It can be daunting to try and declutter your entire home in a day, particularly if you have a lot of clutter. Alternatively, start with a room or a dressing room and go from there. Looking at the linen cupboard and still not knowing where to get started? Remove it all off one shelf and give yourself 10 minutes to decide which stuff you should throw away or donate on that shelf.
Have a box packed away for the hard times
There'll also be a few things you're uncertain of getting rid of as you declutter. Alternatively, pack these things into a box or bag, and leave them for a month in a cupboard. After a month anything that is left in the box can be donated to charity.
Decluttering isn't always easy, but it's a great way to start the year organised and ready to enjoy your clean, peaceful home, if you persevere and be gentle with yourself.
